Tip #120: Use the Snipping Tool (Works with Windows Vista and Windows 7)

Windows comes with an accessory called the Snipping Tool. It allows you to capture a screenshot or snippet of any object on your screen. You can then annotate, save, and share the image. You can find the Snippet tool in your Accessories folder (note that Vista Basic does not have the snippet tool).

I've used this for saving gift ideas for my family -- if I come across something I think would make a good gift, I make a snippet of the product and then add some notes to it about where I found it, who it would make a good gift for, etc.

Here's the types of snips you can make:

Free-form Snip - Draw an irregular line, such as a circle or a triangle, around an object.
Rectangular Snip - Draw a precise line by dragging the cursor around an object to form a rectangle.
Window Snip - Select a window, such as a browser window or dialog box, that you want to capture.
Full-screen Snip - Capture the entire screen when you select this type of snip.

I also suggest making a "scrapbook" or "snippet" folder to save all your snippets in, so you have them all in one place.

Now get snipping (and don't get snippy with me)!
